BOTOX Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) for injection, is a sterile, vacuum-dried purified botulinum toxin type A, produced from fermentation of Hall strain Clostridium botulinum type A intended for intramuscular use. It is purified from the culture solution by dialysis and a series of acid precipitations to a complex consisting of the neurotoxin , and several accessory proteins. The complex is dissolved in sterile sodium chloride solution containing Albumin Human and is sterile filtered (0.2 microns) prior to filling and vacuum-drying.
In double-blind, placebo-controlled chronic migraine efficacy trials (Study 1 and Study 2), the discontinuation rate was 12% in the BOTOX treated group and 10% in the placebo-treated group. Discontinuations due to an adverse event were 4% in the BOTOX group and 1% in the placebo group. The most frequent adverse events leading to discontinuation in the BOTOX group were neck pain , headache, worsening migraine, muscular weakness and eyelid ptosis The most frequently reported adverse reactions following injection of BOTOX for chronic migraine appear in Table 14.
BOTOX treatments typically take only 15 minutes, and there is very little discomfort involved. The needle used for the injections is tiny, and causes minimal redness or irritation. The placement of the injections and the amount of BOTOX used will be determined by your specific concerns and desired results. Most patients return to their normal daily activities immediately following their treatment. Results from BOTOX injections usually emerge over a period of 5 to 7 days with the final result visible by 2 weeks.
Botox injections have been approved by the FDA as effective treatments for hyperhidrosis , or excessive sweating. Botox is injected into the underarms to help control severe sweating by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. By blocking the chemical signals, the sweat glands stop producing excessive amounts of sweat.
Unlike collagen injections, Botox is primarily used to treat wrinkles. The injection of Botox into the lips will not compare to the favored creams, gels and fillers primarily used for lip plumping. However, Botox is a great solution for someone seeking line or wrinkle removal close to the lip, which will in turn plump the lips and cause them to appear fuller. Added benefit of Botox injections: they do not cause any of the ill side effects such as redness, rash, and swelling more commonly associated with conventional lip injections. Patients who receive Botox lip injections can go about their daily activities and attend social functions or special events immediately following the procedure.
Not only can BOTOX® Cosmetic help treat fine lines and wrinkles, it is also a proven treatment for severe underarm sweating, scientifically known as hyperhidrosis. Numerous clinical studies have shown that the injections work in a similar fashion to facial applications by chemically blocking nerve impulses that stimulate sweat glands, while allowing normal sweating to continue in non-treated areas of the body. Because sweat production is actually halted at treated sites, patients need not fear a back-up” of sweat. As with the facial applications, this is a temporary treatment that lasts approximately two to five months. As with all our services, we are proud to offer our patients these BOTOX® treatment options here at Northwest Plastic Surgery Associates, PLLC, serving Missoula and all surrounding Montana areas.
